About Us

Troop 1970 has been serving the youth of the Reston area and has been continuously sponsored by the United Christian Parish for nearly 50 years.

With over 80 Eagle Scouts already and more added every year, we are an active troop that adheres to the boy-led patrol method and believes that scouting is “fun with a purpose.” We believe in teaching our scouts the skills they will need for successful adult lives, while having a great time.

We meet every Monday from 7:30 - 9 PM at the United Christian Parish, 11508 North Shore Drive, Reston, VA 20190 (between Wiehle Ave. and Reston Parkway).

  • Energetic adult leaders

  • Strong sponsoring organization UCP Work Day

  • Monthly outings, including campouts

  • Annual summer camp

  • Active High Adventure participation (Philmont, Northern Tier, and Sea Base)

  • Weekly troop meetings

  • Quarterly Court of Honor ceremonies

  •  Other regular activities around Reston and the larger Fairfax County community, including:

    • Reston Triathlon

    • Service projects

    • Adopt a Highway

    • Scouting for Food

    • And our famous MULCH every spring!

We keep our troop dues as low as possible by funding most of the troop’s expenses through one fundraising event each year. Our annual mulch sale in March is structured so that over 50% of the troop’s net proceeds are reallocated to the scouts and their families in the form of “Scout Bucks.” Scout Bucks can be used in lieu of payment for all scout outings and can be redeemed for purchases of scouting-related equipment.

We encourage all our scouts and their parents to actively participate in the operation of the troop. The troop is what WE make it. Parents are also encouraged to register as Adult Leaders, contribute their ideas, and provide oversight at the monthly Troop Committee Meetings.
